How to choose a CNC lathe
Start from the part: its largest diameter and length set the swing and turning length you need, and the material and tolerance set the rigidity. Slant-bed lathes suit most shafts and flanges; box guideways are chosen for heavy cuts. Gang-type lathes such as the DMC DL G Series are fast on small, repetitive parts. If the part also needs drilling, milling or tapping, a turn-mill center such as the LEADWELL TM Series can finish it in one setup. Heavy, short parts such as discs, wheels and housings are easier to load on a vertical turning machine such as the FEELER FVT-450/600, and pick-up machines such as the SMS Challenger suit automated, high-volume production. Crankshafts have dedicated machines such as the VDF CX. On the models listed, swing diameters run from about 250 mm to 650 mm.
What to send for a quotation
Send a drawing or photo of the part, the material, the largest diameter and length, the batch size or annual volume, and the tolerance and surface finish you need. Tell us your preferred CNC control and power supply, and whether you need a bar feeder, parts catcher or robot loading.
FAQ
Slant bed or flat bed?
A slant bed lets chips fall away from the cutting zone and gives a more rigid tool layout, so it is the usual choice for CNC production. Flat-bed lathes are simpler and suit large-diameter, low-volume work.
When is a turn-mill center worth it?
When a part needs milled flats, cross holes or keyways after turning. Doing it on one machine removes a second setup and the errors that come with it.
Vertical or horizontal turning?
Vertical turning suits heavy parts that are large in diameter and short in length, because gravity helps hold the part on the chuck. Long shafts belong on a horizontal lathe.
