Burrs, dimensional drift and cracked parts in progressive stamping usually trace back to three things: the press, the die and the material. The press sets the limits for the other two.
Match the press type to the part
- C-type presses are compact and easy to load from three sides; they suit smaller parts and lighter tonnage.
- Gantry (straight-side) presses resist frame deflection under off-centre loads, which keeps the die aligned on larger progressive dies.
- Knuckle presses slow the slide near bottom dead centre, which helps coining, precise forming and thick material.
- Servo presses let you program the slide motion, useful for difficult materials and for tuning a new die.
- Pull-down presses keep the drive below the bed for a low centre of gravity at high stroke rates.
What reduces defects
- Frame rigidity and guiding: multi-column and eight-sided guiding keep the slide parallel to the bed, so the die closes the same way on every stroke.
- Tonnage with margin: a press working near its limit deflects more; choose capacity with headroom for the hardest material you will run.
- Die and feeding: accurate coil feeding and straightening, and dies maintained on schedule, matter as much as the press.
- Monitoring: tonnage and misfeed monitoring stop the press before a fault damages the die.
