Refractories for Steel Plants: What to Specify for EAF, Ladle and Tundish Linings

In a steel plant, refractories are consumables that decide whether a furnace, ladle or tundish stays in service until the next planned reline. When a lining fails early, the cost is not the bricks — it is the lost heats, the emergency repair and the risk to people. This guide is for steel plant maintenance, refractory and procurement teams in Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa who source refractories from overseas.

Where refractories are used

Why the cheapest lining is rarely the cheapest

A lining is judged by its campaign life and by how predictable that life is. Products that wear unevenly force unplanned stops, and parts that crack or erode in the flow-control system can spoil a heat or a cast. When comparing offers, compare the expected service in your operating conditions — not only the price per tonne.

What to put in a refractory enquiry

  • The vessel, its capacity and the zone each product goes into, ideally with the lining drawing or zoning sketch.
  • Product type and the key properties you specify — chemistry, density, porosity, strength and, for carbon-containing bricks, carbon content — with the test standard you use.
  • Brick shapes and sizes, or the installation method for monolithics (gunning, casting, ramming, dry vibration).
  • For flow-control parts, the drawings or the model they must fit, including the slide gate mechanism.
  • Your current campaign life and what limits it, so that the right grade is proposed.
  • Quantities per relining and the relining schedule.

Documents and inspection

Ask for a test certificate per batch showing the agreed properties, and agree the packing — refractories need protection from moisture in transit and storage, and carbon-containing products and monolithics have shelf-life and storage requirements. For critical items, third-party inspection by a body such as SGS or BV is common practice; where you request it through us, the fee is paid by the buyer.

How we work

YuxingCorp coordinates refractory supply from manufacturers we have visited and qualified, together with supplier coordination and shipping and freight logistics coordination. Each shipment comes with a complete export document pack — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading. Import customs clearance, duties, taxes and local registration are the buyer’s responsibility. Our standard payment terms are T/T: 30% deposit and 70% before shipment.
