Electro Galvanized Steel (EGI)

Electro galvanized steel (EGI) is cold-rolled steel with a thin, even zinc layer applied by electroplating. The smooth surface takes paint and powder coating well, and the steel keeps the forming and welding behaviour of cold-rolled sheet. EGI coil and sheet to JIS G3313 SECC, SECD and SECE, 0.3–1.6 mm thick, for appliance panels, electrical enclosures, computer cases and steel furniture.

What is EGI steel?

EGI (electro galvanized iron) is cold-rolled steel coated with zinc in an electrolytic line instead of by dipping in molten zinc. The coating is thin and very even: 10–30 g/m² per side for this product, against roughly 100–275 g/m² in total (both sides) on standard hot-dip galvanized steel such as EN 10346 Z100 to Z275. EGI is therefore chosen where surface finish, flatness and paint adhesion matter more than heavy corrosion protection.

EGI vs hot-dip galvanized (GI) steel

  • Surface: EGI has a smooth, spangle-free surface that takes paint and powder coating well; GI has a thicker coating, often with visible spangle.
  • Corrosion protection: the thin EGI coating is meant for indoor use or for parts that are painted after forming. For roofing, wall cladding and outdoor exposure, use hot-dip galvanized steel, Galvalume (GL) steel or pre-painted PPGI / PPGL.
  • Forming and welding: because the coating is thin, EGI bends, draws and spot-welds much like uncoated cold-rolled steel.

Grades and coating mass

JIS G3313 grades: SECC (commercial quality) for general bending and forming, SECD (drawing quality) and SECE (deep drawing quality) for deeper-drawn parts. Coating mass designations 10, 20 and 30 mean 10, 20 and 30 g/m² per side, with JIS minimums of 8.5, 17 and 25.5 g/m². Similar products are made to ASTM A879 and EN 10152 (for example DC01+ZE). Surface treatment can be chromate or phosphate treatment and oiling; phosphate-treated sheet is often specified when the parts will be painted.

Applications

  • Household appliances: washing machine and refrigerator panels, oven and microwave casings, usually painted.
  • Electrical and IT equipment: switchboards and control cabinets, computer and server cases, power supply housings.
  • Steel furniture: office cabinets, shelving and lockers.
  • Building interiors: ceiling tiles, door frames, ducting and light fittings.
  • Automotive: inner panels and parts that are painted after forming.

What to send for a quotation

Send the grade (for example SECC), thickness and width, coating mass per side, surface treatment (chromate, phosphate or oiled), coil inner diameter and maximum coil weight (up to 20 t), or the sheet length if you need cut sheets, plus the quantity and destination port. If the steel will be painted in your plant, tell us the paint system so the right surface treatment can be specified.

FAQ

Can EGI be used outdoors?

Not without painting. The zinc layer is thin, so bare EGI is for indoor use. For roofing, cladding or outdoor structures use hot-dip galvanized, Galvalume or pre-painted steel.

What does SECC mean?

SECC is the JIS G3313 designation for electrolytic zinc-coated cold-rolled steel sheet of commercial quality. SECD and SECE are the drawing and deep-drawing qualities.

What is the difference between EGI and GI?

Both are zinc-coated steel. EGI is coated by electroplating, with a thin, even layer and a smooth surface for painting; GI is coated by hot dipping, with a thicker layer for better corrosion protection.

How We Work - Our Commitments

Each commitment carries a condition and a remedy. A promise without conditions is marketing.

Commitment:

A written sourcing report within 48 hours of a complete requirement brief.

Conditions:

Requires machine type or output target, destination country, and timeline. Custom or multi-line projects may take longer – we tell you upfront.

Remedy:

If we cannot meet it, you receive an interim response with a firm date –
not silence.

Commitment:

Third-party pre-shipment inspection – SGS or BV – before balance payment is released.

Conditions:

Included as standard on production-line projects. Available on request for single machines. Scope agreed in writing before booking.

Remedy:

If inspection fails against the agreed specification, shipment does not release until corrected or you approve a deviation in writing.

Commitment:

Complete export document pack – commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and destination-specific conformity documents.

Conditions:

Destination conformity regimes (CE, EAC, SABER/SASO, PVOC, SONCAP) vary and change. We confirm the applicable route per project before contract.

Remedy:

If a document we are responsible for causes a customs hold, we resolve it and carry the correction cost.

Commitment:

12-month equipment warranty with a named responsible contact and a written spare-parts dispatch commitment.

Conditions:

Covers manufacturing defects under normal operation and specified maintenance. Wear parts and consumables excluded.

Remedy:

Dispatch window and remedy – details to be confirmed. Contact us for project-specific warranty terms.
